Bertani
Building a Resilient Farming Community
Established in 2024, Bertani is dedicated to building a thriving community of Indonesian farmers committed to sustainable agriculture and food security. It is a network of community-based agricultural hubs led by Pelopor Tani (Pioneer Farmers) — local farmer champions embedded within the community. Bertani drives lasting behavior change through three integrated components: field facilitators embedded in farming communities who promote Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Pelopor Tani recruited to serve as peer influencers, and Pak Dayat — an AI agronomist accessible via WhatsApp that provides on-demand advisory. By integrating climate-smart and regenerative agriculture practices with support from our partners, these hubs empower farmers to become more resilient to climate change and its environmental impacts.
Our Approach
An integrated approach that combines technical training, community development, and cross-sector partnerships to promote sustainable and equitable agricultural growth.
We recruit Pelopor Tani (Pioneer Farmers) — trusted, influential figures within their community — to drive peer-to-peer learning and influence the adoption of climate-smart and regenerative practices, such as Alternate Wetting and Drying and no-burn rice cultivation, as well as new products and innovations such as Edufarmers' agronomic AI, Pak Dayat.
To showcase the impact of agricultural inputs, practices, and innovations, our field facilitators work alongside Pelopor Tani to develop demonstration plots that give farmers direct evidence to encourage broader adoption within their farming community.
Farmer Field Schools (FFS) are then built around these demonstration plots, where farmers engage in hands-on learning directly in the field, observing, experimenting, and applying Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) under real-life conditions. FFS is also where farmers are introduced to Pak Dayat, Edufarmers' WhatsApp-based agronomic AI. Learning together, season after season, also strengthens the community bonds that keep this progress in place.
To provide easier access to agri-inputs that promote soil health and increase farmers' productivity, we collaborate with companies to co-finance this ecosystem. This builds on the demand our own program creates, as farmers adopt Bertani-recommended practices, they seek out products matched to their specific needs — inputs such as decomposers (in place of burning residue) to improve soil health, biostimulants, and pest control products targeted to the problems they actually face.
